And actually see views of Mt Hood.

Portland's waterfront flooded in 1894 and the Vanport flood on May 30, 1948 left 18,000 people homeless. Subsequent flood control programs created a system of regional dams. The success of the effort is still measured against the loss in 1957 when The Dalles dam backwaters flooded the Columbia River Native American fishery of Celilo Falls.

Portland's Washington Park is noted for it's breadth, the Rose Test Garden, viewpoints of the city and Mt. Hood, and the Pittock Mansion. Embracing a hillside above the Rose Garden, Portland's Japanese Garden, has inspired photos by Larry Geddis and Dennis Frates that seek a visual balance of energy and serenity. Eastside Portland parks include bucolic Crystal Springs Rhododendron Test Garden next to Reed College and the popular Laurelhurst Park's broad lawns and large trees.

On Broadway represents a century of photographic images of the main drag through downtown Portland. Historic black and white and Kodachrome color prints depict a stroll through ten decades from Ankeny to Main.

Posh hotels, glitzy theaters, smart shops, and prosperous fashions come and go as Broadway's profile swells with cars, crowds and buildings.

With so much change, it's startling to recognize a corner you have recently turned has been the passage of so many others before, fusing our experiences over time.
